Rex Beach wrote a mean western, his ideas were less about evil Indians, and more about real life. I think I enjoyed this book due to the realist account of life for those going thru the ups and downs of real life without the comforts of the big city, from famine, starvation, winters, even including the eating of dog meat.
If you want to read about the real life that the settles when thru, read The Barrier.
Set in the wilds of the Yukon during the gold rush. Local lass Necia Gale is the daughter of the town's white trader and his Indian common-law wife. French Canadian Poleon Doret loves and accepts Necia for who she is, so naturally she doesn't want him. Lt. Meade Burrell is attracted to the underage girl but he can't look past his own prejudices at her being a "half breed", so of course he's the one Necia pines for.
